Psychiatric aides work closely with emotionally disturbed or mentally impaired individuals whom they assist with personal regiments and routines including the tasks of bathing, dressing, and grooming. Apart from that, they are expected to socialize with their patients with whom they perform recreational and educational activities.
Such individuals work with psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, therapists, psychologists, and social workers to whom they report whenever they observe any changes in the behavior or physical well-being of their patients. They also personally assist and accompany their patients whenever there is a need for therapy or other forms of treatment.
Psychiatric Aides' Employment Outlook and Wage Expectations
In 2009, employed psychiatric aides in the United States amounted to 62,610. That amount is expected to grow by about 5.57% to 66,100 by the year 2018. At present, most of such workers are employed by hospitals but they should expect to see greater demand within residential facilities typically catering to individuals with substance abuse problems, mental illness, and developmental disabilities.
Psychiatric aides in the United States earn US$27,430 per year or approximately US$13.19, on the average. In 2009, the middle 50% of all such workers earned average salary rates between US$20,020 and US$32,810. The lowest-earning 10% were paid less than US$16,910 per year while the highest-earning 10% were given an average salary amounting to more than US$41,540 per year.
